Florentine Chianti and Sienese Chianti: what changes for the owner

Tripcare manages houses on both sides of Chianti Classico and treats them differently: the Florentine Chianti — Greve, San Casciano, Tavarnelle, Barberino — lives on its closeness to Florence and works in low season too; the Sienese Chianti — Castellina, Radda, Gaiole, Castelnuovo — sells wine and silence and closes more sharply in November.

The difference shows in the calendar and in the requests. To the north, guests book four or five nights, ask for a transfer from Peretola and a day at the Uffizi; the competition is city apartments, and a villa with a pool wins only if the listing says how close it is and how different. To the south, bookings are weekly, with a September peak for the harvest and guests who pick the house for the cellar within walking distance; the competition is agriturismi, and maintenance wins: gravel roads, wells, LPG.

• San GimignanoSan Gimignano is the most photographed municipality in the province of Siena and the one where management differs most from what people imagine.
• Castellina in ChiantiCastellina in Chianti sits on the Chiantigiana, the SR 222, halfway between Florence and Siena, and is one of the historic municipalities of Chianti Classico: here the Black Rooster is not marketing, it is the production code.
• San Casciano in Val di PesaSan Casciano in Val di Pesa is the Florentine Chianti, and the closeness to Florence changes everything: the city centre is a quarter of an hour away by expressway, Peretola airport half an hour, and guests who book here want museums by day and vineyards in the evening.
• Gambassi TermeGambassi Terme owes the second half of its name to the Acqua di Pillo, the spring that rises in the thermal park on the edge of the village and that in 1977 earned the municipality the title of “Terme”: tourism here began with the drinking cure.
• Radda in ChiantiRadda in Chianti was the seat of the Lega del Chianti from 1415, and the Palazzo del Podestà with the coats of arms on its façade still recalls it: this is the highest and most inland of the Black Rooster municipalities, at 530 metres on the ridge that separates the Pesa valley from the Arbia.
• Panzano in ChiantiPanzano in Chianti is not a municipality but a hamlet of Greve, and that changes the paperwork before it changes the management: tourist tax, regulations and registrations belong to the Comune of Greve in Chianti, while the village has an identity of its own.
• MontaioneMontaione sits on the ridge between the Valdelsa and the Valdera, at 340 metres, with the main village gathered on its hill and the territory split into hamlets: Castelfalfi, San Vivaldo, Iano, Sughera, Le Mura.
• Greve in ChiantiGreve in Chianti is the most populous municipality of Chianti Classico and the closest to Florence: the Chiantigiana, the SR 222, enters the town and runs beside piazza Matteotti, the triangular arcaded square with the statue of Giovanni da Verrazzano and the Antica Macelleria Falorni, open since 1729.
