Hot-air balloon over Chianti

You lift off at dawn, when the air is still: an hour above vines, parish churches and white roads, low enough to hear the dogs on the farms. You land where the wind decides; the 4x4 follows and takes you back to the start, with breakfast and a glass as tradition requires. Book a few days out and confirm the evening before: in the wrong wind you do not fly, and the pilot says so plainly. Children from six up, an early alarm — worth both.

Vespa tour through the hills

Vintage or modern Vespas, delivered to the villa or the start point, with helmets and a route that avoids the main road. You ride slowly: a village, a country church, a trattoria lunch, eighty kilometres that feel like more for what you see. You need a licence and some feel for the gears, otherwise you ride pillion. There is also the version with a lead rider opening the road. The concierge sizes the loop to who you are, not to a leaflet.

E-bike tour through the hills

Electric bikes delivered to the villa or the start point, helmets, a guide who knows the white roads and where you can stop without ending on the edge of the provincial road. You cover vines and olives that would not hold on foot; you dismount where the view deserves it, not every three minutes for a photograph. Duration and climb are adapted to the group. At sunset in Val d’Orcia, if the villa is in the area, the return meets the low light on the cypresses.

Horseback ride

Maremma or trekking horses, a walking pace, country tracks rather than a resort riding school. Saddle experience is assessed before a horse is assigned; beginners stay at a walk. Late afternoon is the right hour: less heat, long light, back at the villa for dinner. Boots and a helmet if you do not have them; the concierge confirms the stables, the length and whether children can ride.

Countryside cycling

Routes on secondary tarmac and white roads, with road or gravel bikes according to the surface. You can leave with a guide or with a track and a support number. The concierge arranges delivery, spares and a backup van if the group is mixed. This is not a gran fondo: it is a morning between two villages, a coffee, and the return before Chianti traffic wakes.
