Siena with a private guide

Piazza del Campo, the Duomo with the floor uncovered if the season allows, the lanes of the contrade: Siena is understood on foot, with someone who can read the emblems and the Palio without reducing it to folklore. In July and August the trials and the race change the city; the concierge checks closures and times before you leave. You arrive by transfer, lunch away from the Campo at noon, and return to the villa before the provincial road fills.

Two villages in a day, not four. Pienza before the coaches, Montepulciano for Vino Nobile, San Gimignano at nine if you want the square without the gelato queue. They are forty minutes apart and neither deserves a sprint: the guide cuts to interest — the tower is booked with a time slot, the walls are ridden in the cool. Florence artisan workshops

The Oltrarno, not the Ponte Vecchio windows: a bookbinder, a goldsmith, a leather workshop that works to commission. You enter where deliveries usually go, watch the cutting and stitching, and can order a piece to collect or have shipped. Two or three workshops in one morning, chosen on what actually interests you — paper, gold, leather. The concierge sets the appointments: many workshops open by arrangement, not to passers-by.

Val d’Orcia at sunset

The photographs you have seen of Tuscany were almost all taken here, in the hour before sunset: the San Quirico cypresses, the Vitaleta chapel, the clay hills towards Pienza. You leave the villa in the afternoon with a driver who knows where to stop without blocking the road, and close with a glass or dinner at Bagno Vignoni. In summer the good light comes at eight; in autumn at six, with fog in the valleys if you are lucky.
