Volterra AD 1398 takes the town back to the Middle Ages for two Sundays in August: markets with period coins, craft workshops, processions, jugglers, archers and taverns in the historic centre, with hundreds of costumed performers and visitors invited to join in. Volterra is the Etruscan and alabaster town, with the Guarnacci Museum and the Roman theatre, and the festival builds on a centre already dense with things to see.
In August the villas between Volterra, Pomarance and the Valdelsa host families looking for the cool of 500 metres of altitude and a town less crowded than San Gimignano: the two festival Sundays are one more reason. The concierge arranges the alabaster visit and dinner after the procession.
