Lucca Comics & Games is Europe’s largest festival of comics, games, animation and pop culture: for five days around All Saints’ the walled city hosts pavilions in every square, exhibitions, meetings with authors and tens of thousands of visitors a day, many in costume. Day tickets sell out weeks ahead and accommodation in the city months ahead.
It is the one Tuscan event that fills houses at the end of October: villas on the Lucca plain and in the Versilia, half an hour from the walls, host groups of friends and families who come for the festival and want a quiet place to return to in the evening. The concierge arranges a shuttle or driver to the park-and-ride car parks, because the centre is closed and regional trains are full.
