L’Eroica
first Sunday of October · Gaiole in Chianti
L’Eroica has set off from Gaiole in Chianti on the first Sunday of October since 1997: a vintage-bike ride in wool jerseys, with refreshment stops of bread, ribollita and wine, along routes of 46 to 209 kilometres mostly on gravel roads. The village fills with participants from all over the world from the Friday, with the vintage market and the bike checks.
For the villas of the area it is the last big weekend of the season: cyclists arrive in groups and ask for a garage or bike store, early breakfasts and a quick laundry. The concierge arranges the transfer to the start, refreshments at the villa on return and a tasting in the Gaiole cellars the day after.
