Viareggio Carnival

The Viareggio Carnival has been held since 1873: five masked parades along the seafront avenues, with papier-mâché allegorical floats up to twenty metres high, built all year in the Cittadella del Carnevale and animated by dozens of performers. The parades fall on weekends between late January and February, plus Shrove Tuesday; parade evenings end with fireworks over the sea.
It is the winter event of the Versilia and the only one that brings guests in an otherwise closed season: Italian families for the weekend, groups renting a nearby villa for two or three nights. The heated houses of Camaiore, Pietrasanta and Forte dei Marmi work; the concierge books parade tickets and a driver, because the promenade is closed and the car parks are far.
