Tavarnelle Val di Pesa is the base for families who want Florence, Siena and San Gimignano while sleeping in the same bed every night. The village sits on the Cassia, the SR 2, at 378 metres, with its own exit on the Florence–Siena motorway link and supermarkets, pharmacies and hardware shops along the main street; since 2019 it has formed the commune of Barberino Tavarnelle with Barberino. The villas are not in the village but in the countryside towards San Donato in Poggio, the walled hamlet that names one of the Chianti Classico UGAs, and towards the Badia a Passignano, the Vallombrosan abbey among Antinori vineyards, with the Osteria di Passignano beside the cloister. Florence is just over half an hour away, Siena forty minutes, San Gimignano twenty. Tripcare arrives from its Poggibonsi office in about 16 minutes.

The stay

From Tavarnelle the villas look two ways: east to the Chianti Classico of San Donato, west to the hills towards San Gimignano. “Villa con piscina a sfioro nel cuore del Chianti”, ten beds, is the house for two families with children who want the pool from the afternoon; “Podere Casanuova - Viridis, Peace in San Gimignano”, for six, suits anyone travelling with grandparents. Roads are asphalted more often than in Radda and, on request, a cot and high chair await you in the house. Check-in is in person. The concierge books the visit and lunch at the Badia a Passignano, timed tickets for the Uffizi and Siena cathedral, groceries delivered before arrival, a chef in the villa, a pizzaiolo and a babysitter for an evening in Florence.

Why Tavarnelle Val di Pesa

Tavarnelle is the midpoint: Florence in a little over half an hour, Siena in forty minutes, San Gimignano in twenty, with its own motorway-link exit that spares you the bends of the Chiantigiana. Compared with Radda or Panzano, the supermarket here is in the village along the Cassia and so is the pharmacy; compared with Poggibonsi, the landscape around the villas is already Chianti Classico, with San Donato in Poggio a few kilometres away. It is the choice of families with children, from Easter to October, for stays of four or five nights too, arriving on any day of the week: outings in the morning, pool from the afternoon.
