Mercantia
mid-July, five evenings · Certaldo
Mercantia is the international street-theatre festival that since 1988 has turned Certaldo Alto, the medieval village at the top of the funicular, into an open-air stage for five July evenings: companies from all over the world, jugglers, musicians and installations in the streets and courtyards, with the audience climbing up at sunset and staying late. Entry is ticketed and the village is reached on foot or by the funicular from the lower town.
For villas between Certaldo, San Gimignano and the Valdelsa it is a July week with an evening offer unlike the usual: families with children and couples who want an evening on their feet among the stones instead of a restaurant. The concierge books tickets and a driver for the return, because the lower town’s car parks fill early.
