Greve in Chianti is the village to choose if you want Florence within reach without sleeping there: it is the most populous commune of Chianti Classico and the closest to the city, with the Chiantigiana, the SR 222, entering the village and skirting piazza Matteotti, the triangular square with its arcades, the statue of Giovanni da Verrazzano and the Antica Macelleria Falorni, trading since 1729. The market is on Saturday morning in the square. Above the village, Montefioralle is a ring of stone houses inside its walls, listed among Italy’s most beautiful villages; higher still, Lamole has terraced vineyards above 500 metres. Why Greve in Chianti
Greve suits anyone who wants city and countryside in the same week: Florence is half an hour away, closer than from Castellina or Radda, and the 365 bus links piazza Matteotti to Florence station, something the other Gallo Nero communes cannot offer. In exchange it is the busiest village in Chianti, above all on the second weekend of September, when the Rassegna del Chianti Classico fills piazza Matteotti with stands. It is the choice of families with children and groups of friends between June and September, for stays as short as four nights, with a cellar within walking distance of Montefioralle.
Getting there
Florence-Peretola airport is about 48 minutes away by car, the closest in all of Chianti; Pisa is about 89 minutes. By train there are two options: Florence Santa Maria Novella, from which the 365 bus leaves for piazza Matteotti, or Montevarchi–Terranuova, 39 minutes by car from the villas, where our transfer waits for you. The centre of Greve has a ZTL, the villas do not, but parking needs explaining and we do that at check-in.
