The Romanesque Pieve di San Leolino takes ten minutes to visit; the market is on Sunday morning in piazza Bucciarelli. Why Panzano in Chianti
Panzano sits halfway between Greve and Castellina and takes the best of both: Florence within a day trip as from Greve, Siena and San Gimignano as from Castellina, but with a smaller village, no ZTL and straightforward parking in the square. It is the choice of couples and groups of friends who stay five or seven nights and build their days around a dinner, a cellar in the Conca d’Oro, an evening in Greve. The season follows the wine: Vino al Vino takes the third weekend of September, the Greve Rassegna the weekend before, and the houses are booked months ahead.
Getting there
Florence airport is about 52 minutes away by car, Pisa about 88; from Florence you come down the Chiantigiana through Greve, from Pisa you arrive by the Florence–Siena motorway link and Castellina. The nearest station is Poggibonsi–San Gimignano, on the Empoli–Siena line, 35 minutes away. Panzano has no ZTL: you park in the square and walk to the butcher’s and the parish church.
