The Palio of Siena has been run in Piazza del Campo twice a year for centuries: 2 July, Palio di Provenzano, and 16 August, Palio dell’Assunta. It is not a show staged for visitors. It is a ritual of the seventeen contrade, with horse, jockey, a blessing in the contrada church and a race of little more than a minute. In 2026, 2 July falls on a Thursday and 16 August on a Sunday.
On the three days before, trials are run in late afternoon. For many villa guests the trial is the clearer choice: you understand the square, you hear the drum, you are home for dinner without the crush of race day. The race itself fills Siena from the morning. Anyone who wants the race must decide where they stand: in the cava (the centre of the square, free, hours in the sun, no facilities), on a stand, or at a rented window, often through the contrada.
Stands and windows move months ahead. By June, for the July Palio, you are already late for the best places. The concierge asks for real availability, not “a table with a view”. If there is no window, you go to a trial or watch from a point outside the square — still Siena, still the day.
The contrade are not tourist districts. They have a museum, an oratory, a fountain. A guide who can tell them — Nicchio, Oca, Torre, Selva and the others — is worth more than any post. A seat at a contrada dinner is rare and comes by introduction, not by buying a ticket online the night before.
Arrival. The centre is closed. You leave the car outside the walls or you do not bring it: transfer from the villa, on foot from the gates. Race-night restaurants in town have been full for days. Dinner back at the villa is the choice that holds family and hours. Children in the cava in August is a decision made cold, not in the square at 3pm.
If you stay in Chianti, Val d’Elsa or towards the Crete, these two dates occupy an afternoon and an evening each, not a “let’s pass through Siena”. They go in the diary with the rest of the week — a cellar, the pool, an empty day after. The Palio is tiring. Leave space around it.
