September and October in Chianti are the season when the villa changes use: less pool at noon, more cellar, more table. Chianti Classico harvest usually falls between the last week of September and mid-October, but the date is set by the vintage, not the tourist calendar. Cellars confirm week by week. Anyone who wants to see picking in the vines accepts a two- or three-day shift, or misses the morning.
Not every estate runs a “harvest experience”. Some take a small group to see the bins and to lunch; others, in full pick, do not open. The concierge calls the producer; they do not sell a package printed in June. If the grapes move early because of heat, the visit moves — you do not invent a stage set.
In Greve in Chianti, in Piazza Matteotti, Expo Chianti Classico is the producers’ fair of the Black Rooster. It has been held for decades, generally on the second weekend of September. 2025 sat mid-month; 2026 is on the Comune and Consortium sites when the programme is published. It is one of the few square events worth the transfer from the villa: stands from real estates, not a touring fair. You go for a morning, back to the house for lunch, or you eat in Greve if you have a table.
From late October San Miniato, towards Pisa, hosts the national white-truffle fair: several weekends, Saturday and Sunday. It pairs with a villa dinner on the same product if the chef has truffle that week — again, the ground decides. It is not a trip to stack on harvest: it is a month later, another logic.
Weather. September is still warm on the terraces; October brings the first rain on the white roads. You book autumn for this double calendar (Expo, then truffle) and for the light, not only for the leaves. An empty day between one event and the next, at the villa, is part of the stay, not leftover time.
Book September as you would book the Palio: with times, a car or a transfer, and a plan B if the grapes or the Expo programme shift. The concierge watches the two sites — Comune di Greve, the Consortium — and tells you. You keep the house as the centre, not as a bed between fairs.
